Ukrainian Food Vocabulary And How To Order In A Restaurant

Knowing how to order food in Ukrainian is essential for your next trip to Kyiv or Lviv.

This guide covers all the basic restaurant vocabulary and phrases you need.

You’ll learn how to ask for a menu, order your favorite dishes, and get the bill.

I’ve also included a simple list of the most common Ukrainian food words.

Arriving and getting a table

When you walk into a Ukrainian restaurant, you need to know how to ask for a table.

Usually, the host will greet you at the door.

You can easily tell them how many people are in your group.

Use the word стілик (table) to make your request.

Listen to audio

Стілик для двох, будь ласка.

Stilyk dlya dvokh, bud laska.
A table for two, please.

Sometimes you can just hold up your fingers to show the number of people.

After you sit down, you’ll need to ask for a menu if it isn’t already on the table.

Listen to audio

Можна меню?

Mozhna menyu?
Could we get the menu?

How to order your food

Once you know what you want, it’s time to order.

The waiter will usually approach your table and ask if you’re ready.

Listen to audio

Ви готові замовити?

Vy hotovi zamovyty?
Are you ready to order?

The easiest way to order is to use the phrase я буду (I’ll have).

Listen to audio

Я буду борщ і салат.

Ya budu borshch i salat.
I'll have the borsch and a salad.

You can also simply point to the menu and say це, будь ласка (this, please).

Listen to audio

Мені це, будь ласка.

Meni tse, bud laska.
I'd like this, please.

If you’re vegetarian, it’s very important to let the waiter know.

Listen to audio

Я не їм м’ясо.

Ya ne yim m'yaso.
I don't eat meat.

Asking for the bill

In Ukraine, you usually have to ask the waiter to bring the bill to your table.

They won’t drop it off automatically unless the restaurant is closing soon.

To ask for the bill, you use the word рахунок.

Listen to audio

Рахунок, будь ласка.

Rakhunok, bud laska.
The bill, please.

You might also want to clarify how you’re paying.

Cash and card are both widely accepted everywhere in Ukraine.

Listen to audio

Можна карткою?

Mozhna kartkoyu?
Can I pay by card?

Leaving a ten percent tip is standard practice in Ukrainian restaurants to show your appreciation.

Regional restaurant variations in Ukraine

Food culture and restaurant vocabulary can change depending on where you are in Ukraine.

In Lviv, coffee culture is a massive part of the local lifestyle.

You’ll often hear the local word філіжанка (cup) instead of the standard чашка when ordering coffee.

Listen to audio

Філіжанку кави, будь ласка.

Filizhanku kavy, bud laska.
A cup of coffee, please.

In Western Ukraine, you might also see potato pancakes called терчаники instead of the standard word деруни.

In the Transcarpathian region, menus heavily feature Hungarian-influenced dishes like бограч (goulash).

Knowing these small regional differences will always impress the local restaurant staff.
